Australian government programme that supports First Nations communities in managing their traditional lands through employment of Indigenous rangers. The initiative funds ranger groups to undertake conservation work, biosecurity operations, fire management and cultural heritage protection across remote areas of the continent.
The programme operates through a network of ranger teams embedded within Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities, combining traditional ecological knowledge with contemporary land management techniques. Rangers conduct practical work including pest and weed control, wildlife monitoring, controlled burning practices and environmental restoration on Country. Funding flows through Indigenous Protected Areas and other land management bodies, creating employment in remote regions while maintaining connections between people and place.
The Indigenous Rangers Program appears in Field Notes: Tiwi rangers complete eradication of tropical fire ants from Melville Island.
