The Australian Government is the national executive government of Australia, a federal parliamentary constitutional monarchy led by the prime minister and cabinet ministers who command majority support in the House of Representatives.
The prime minister, a role that exists by convention rather than statute, is appointed by the governor-general and typically leads the party holding a lower-house majority. Since the 2022 federal election, Anthony Albanese has served as prime minister, heading a government formed by the Australian Labor Party. Ministers exercise both legislative power, through their control of parliament, and executive power on behalf of the governor-general and the monarch. Under responsible government principles, these executive actions remain subject to parliamentary scrutiny. The government is headquartered in the executive wing of Parliament House in Canberra, the national capital within the Australian Capital Territory, where all federal department head offices are also located.
