Deon Barrett is a British adventurer, speaker, and advocate for youth empowerment through outdoor education. He is the founder of the True North Project, an initiative aimed at inspiring young people, particularly from urban communities, to discover their potential through engagement with nature and adventure.
🌱 Early Life and Transformation
Growing up in Southwest London, Deon faced challenges related to identity, discrimination, and a lack of positive role models. These experiences led to struggles with mental health and involvement in gang culture. A turning point came when his mother’s passion for travel exposed him to new environments, igniting a love for the outdoors. Joining the British Armed Forces in 2015 further instilled resilience and a renewed appreciation for nature.
🎯 The True North Project
Founded in January 2022, the True North Project seeks to empower young individuals by integrating outdoor education into their lives. Through workshops, expeditions, and school programs, the project aims to build confidence, resilience, and a sense of purpose among participants. Deon’s vision includes advocating for the inclusion of outdoor learning in the national curriculum, recognizing its importance in personal development.
🏔️ Everest 2025 Expedition
Deon aspires to become the first Black Englishman to summit Mount Everest, with an expedition planned for 2025. This endeavor is not only a personal milestone but also a symbolic act to inspire underrepresented communities to pursue their ambitions, regardless of societal barriers.
