The Baltoro Glacier is a glacier in the Shigar District of Gilgit-Baltistan, in the Pakistan-administered Kashmir region. Its name derives from the Balti language, meaning “bone breaker”.
Lying in the Karakoram range, the Baltoro is surrounded by some of the highest mountains on Earth. K2, the world’s second-highest peak at 8,611 metres, rises near the glacier, alongside three other summits above 8,000 metres within a 20-kilometre radius. At 4,600 metres, the glacier meets the Godwin-Austen Glacier at a junction known as Concordia. Scientific observations between 2001 and 2011 recorded visible changes in the Baltoro’s snow and ice cover, particularly near Concordia. However, research indicates the glacier is not retreating in the conventional sense but experiencing surges—episodes of rapid movement and flow into neighbouring glaciers. These dynamics distinguish the Baltoro from many glaciers worldwide that are shrinking under climate pressure.
