Broad Peak is an eight-thousander mountain in the Karakoram range, straddling the border between Gilgit-Baltistan, Pakistan and Xinjiang, China. At 8,051 metres above sea level, it stands as the 12th highest mountain in the world.
The mountain earned its first ascent in June 1957 by an Austrian expedition comprising Fritz Wintersteller, Marcus Schmuck, Kurt Diemberger and Hermann Buhl. Positioned within the Karakoram — one of the planet’s most concentrated clusters of extreme altitude peaks — Broad Peak represents a significant objective in high-altitude mountaineering. The mountain’s name derives from the extended, flat summit ridge that distinguishes it from the sharper profiles of neighbouring giants. Its remote location and technical demands place it firmly within the canon of elite Himalayan climbing, drawing expeditions that test human endurance and acclimatisation at the outer margins of survivable altitude.
