The Ultimate is a 2001 novel by Katherine Applegate, the fiftieth book in the young adult science fiction series Animorphs.
Published towards the end of the main Animorphs sequence, the book continues the series’ exploration of young people thrust into guerrilla warfare against an alien invasion of Earth. The Animorphs books follow a group of teenagers who gain the ability to transform into any animal they touch, using this power to conduct covert operations against the parasitic Yeerks. The series, which ran from 1996 to 2001, blended wildlife biology with themes of identity, morality and survival, requiring its protagonists to understand animal behaviour and ecology as tools of resistance. The shape-shifting premise placed natural history and species adaptation at the heart of its narrative, making each creature’s physical capabilities and instincts central to the characters’ tactical choices.
