🌿 Rupununi Savannah – Guyana’s Wild Frontier

The Rupununi Savannah is a vast and ecologically rich plain in southern Guyana, encompassing approximately 13,000 square kilometers. Situated between the Rupununi River and the Brazilian border, it forms part of the Guianan savanna ecoregion within the tropical and subtropical grasslands, savannas, and shrublands biome. The region is divided into northern and southern sections by the Kanuku Mountains, which are among the most biologically diverse areas in Guyana.

📍 Geography & Ecosystems

The Rupununi Savannah features a mix of grasslands, wetlands, and forested mountains. During the wet season (May to August), the area experiences significant flooding, transforming the landscape into a mosaic of habitats that support a wide array of flora and fauna. The North Rupununi Wetlands, covering about 22,000 hectares, are particularly notable for their ecological importance.

🦜 Biodiversity

This region supports a substantial portion of Guyana’s biodiversity, including:

  • Birds: Over 250 species, including the Harpy Eagle and the critically endangered Red Siskin.
  • Mammals: Jaguars, giant otters, capybaras, and giant anteaters.
  • Reptiles: Black caimans, green anacondas, and red-footed tortoises.
  • Fish: More than 400 species, such as the arapaima and red-bellied piranha.

👥 Indigenous Communities

The Rupununi is home to several Amerindian groups, including the Wapishana, Macushi, Wai-Wai, and Patamona peoples. These communities engage in traditional practices like farming, fishing, hunting, and craftwork. The main town, Lethem, serves as a hub for trade and cultural exchange, particularly with neighboring Brazil.

🌍 Ecotourism & Conservation

Ecotourism is a growing industry in the Rupununi, with lodges like Dadanawa Ranch and Karanambu Ranch offering visitors opportunities to experience the region’s natural beauty and wildlife. Conservation efforts are ongoing to protect the area’s unique ecosystems and support sustainable development for local communities.
