The Ocean Observatories Initiative is a National Science Foundation program that operates a network of science-driven platforms and sensors across the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans, designed to gather long-term data on marine environments.
Established as a Major Research Facility, the initiative measures physical, chemical, geological and biological variables from the seafloor to the sea surface and overlying atmosphere. The networked infrastructure spans coastal, regional and global scales, providing an integrated data collection system intended to operate for at least 25 years. This sustained observation approach allows researchers to track changes in ocean environments over time, from shifts in water chemistry and temperature to biological patterns and geological processes. The data collected supports investigations into critical ocean issues including climate dynamics, ecosystem health and the complex interactions between different layers of the marine environment.
