Ian Craddock.

Ian Craddock is a British engineer and academic specialising in radar imaging for medical applications, particularly breast cancer detection. He is a professor at the University of Bristol and Director of the EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training in Digital Health and Care.

Craddock completed his doctorate in electromagnetics at Bristol in 1995 and initially worked on microwave antenna modelling and humanitarian demining radar systems. In collaboration with Professor Alan Preece, he adapted multistatic radar principles — originally developed by Ralph Benjamin — to detect tumours in breast tissue. As principal investigator on two EPSRC grants, he led the team that built successive prototypes of a radar-based breast imaging system. In 2005 he co-founded Micrima Ltd to commercialise the device MARIA, which achieved regulatory approval and reached the market. He later directed SPHERE, an £11.8 million project on sensor technologies for healthcare. Named a Fellow of the IEEE in 2016 for leadership in imaging for healthcare applications, Craddock is also a Chartered Engineer, Fellow of the IET and Fellow of the Alan Turing Institute.
