Gulf of Maine Research Institute.

The Gulf of Maine Research Institute is a non-profit marine science centre and research organisation based in Portland, Maine. It works on ecosystem stewardship, sustainable seafood systems, science education and the resilience of coastal communities.

The institute operates at the intersection of marine research and practical application, focusing on the Gulf of Maine — a large marine ecosystem stretching from Cape Cod to Nova Scotia. Its programmes address the ecological and economic challenges facing fishing communities, particularly as the Gulf experiences some of the fastest ocean warming rates globally. GMRI combines field research, data analysis and stakeholder collaboration to support fisheries management and help communities adapt to environmental change. Its work spans commercial fisheries science, seafood supply chain development and educational initiatives that connect young people to marine science and coastal livelihoods.
