The giant squid, Architeuthis dux, lives in the cold middle depths of the world’s oceans. For most of human history it was known only from corpses washed ashore or hauled up in nets. It can reach 12 to 13 metres, tentacles included, and carries the largest eyes of any known animal — each about the size of a dinner plate.
Live sightings are rare enough to make headlines. Most records come not from cameras but from fragments: a beak in a sperm whale’s stomach, a limb in a trawl, or, now, a trace of DNA in a sample of seawater.
