Climbing Gold.

Climbing Gold (棒金, bōkin) is a shogi strategy in which the Static Rook player advances their right gold piece vertically up the board—along the second file for Black or the eighth file for White—with the rook providing support from behind.

The manoeuvre is deployed across different opening systems and proves particularly effective as a counter to the Ishida formation, an aggressive arrangement favoured by Ranging Rook players. By pushing the gold steadily forward with the rook’s backing, the Static Rook side builds pressure along a single file, creating a compact attacking structure that can be difficult to dislodge. The strategy reflects shogi’s tactical depth: a single piece, properly supported, can shift the balance of the board when advanced with purpose and timing.
