Blue Marine Foundation is a UK-based charity working on ocean conservation and the recovery of sustainable fisheries through the creation of marine protected areas and collaboration with coastal communities.
The organisation was established in 2010 as a direct response to The End of the Line, a 2009 documentary that examined the collapse of global fish stocks. Since then, Blue Marine has contributed to the designation of marine reserves in locations including Lyme Bay off the south coast of England, Turneffe Atoll in Belize, and four million square kilometres of protected waters across the UK Overseas Territories. The foundation operates by working with governments, fishing industries and local stakeholders to design protected areas that balance ecological recovery with the needs of people who depend on the sea.
Blue Marine Foundation features in Field Notes: French Polynesia designates 520,000 square kilometres as highest protection marine reserve.
