Schmidt Ocean Institute is a non-profit operating foundation established in March 2009 by Eric Schmidt and Wendy Schmidt to advance oceanographic research through technological innovation, collaboration and open data sharing.
The Institute provides researchers with free ship time aboard its research vessel RV Falkor (too), along with expert technical support. Collaborating scientists and institutions must commit to openly sharing all research outcomes, including raw observations and data. Research proposals undergo peer review and are assessed on their potential for technological innovation, scientific impact and contribution to oceanographic knowledge. Since 2009, the Institute has supported more than 60 expeditions worldwide, advancing understanding of the ocean through accessible, collaborative science.
Schmidt Ocean Institute features in our Field Notes coverage of ocean and marine conservation developments.
