Walking the Amazon was the first recorded expedition to traverse the entire length of the Amazon River from source to sea on foot, completed by British explorer Ed Stafford and recognised as a Guinness World Record.
The 860-day expedition began at the river’s source and ended at the Atlantic, taking Stafford through some of the most remote and challenging terrain on Earth. The walk crossed Peru and Brazil, passing through dense rainforest, isolated indigenous territories and regions with minimal human contact. Stafford self-filmed much of the ordeal, capturing the physical and psychological demands of such an undertaking. The expedition became the subject of a two-part Discovery Channel documentary and a book published by Virgin Books, both titled Walking the Amazon. The achievement remains a benchmark in long-distance exploration on foot, demonstrating what sustained endurance and meticulous planning can accomplish in one of the planet’s most unforgiving environments.
