Toba Pulp Lestari.

Toba Pulp Lestari is an Indonesian paper milling company operating in Sumatra. The firm was established in 1989 and is owned by Sukanto Tanoto, one of Indonesia’s wealthiest businesspeople.

The company produces pulp and paper products from plantations in North Sumatra. Its operations have periodically drawn scrutiny from environmental and social watchdogs concerning land use, community relations and forestry practices in the region. Like many large-scale pulp producers in Southeast Asia, Toba Pulp Lestari sits at the intersection of Indonesia’s forestry industry, certification debates and ongoing tensions between industrial development and forest conservation.

The company features in Field Notes: APRIL’s new forest suppliers jeopardise Forest Stewardship Council remedy talks, which examines supply chain controversies affecting certification processes.
