Barcarena.

Barcarena is a municipality in the state of Pará, northern Brazil, positioned adjacent to the Tocantins River within the Belém metropolitan area. The municipality has a population of approximately 127,000.

The local economy depends primarily on agriculture and bauxite extraction, with pig iron production facilities also operating in the vicinity. Barcarena functions as a developing transshipment port, handling goods transported by rail from inland ports across Brazil for international export. This arrangement reduces shipping times and costs compared to routing cargo through traditional megaports in Brazil’s southeast. The combination of river access, rail connectivity and mineral resources has positioned Barcarena as a significant node in the country’s export infrastructure, particularly for commodities extracted from the Amazon basin and interior regions.
