The Asháninka are an Indigenous people whose ancestral lands lie in the rainforests of Peru’s Junín, Pasco, Huánuco and Ucayali regions, with communities also present in Brazil’s Acre State.
Their territory spans the forested lowlands and uplands of central Peru, where they have maintained deep ties to the land through hunting, fishing, agriculture and the stewarding of forest resources. The Asháninka have faced sustained pressures from colonisation, resource extraction and territorial encroachment, yet continue to assert rights over their ancestral forests. Their knowledge of rainforest ecology and seasonal patterns remains central to their cultural identity and to broader efforts to protect the Amazon basin from deforestation and degradation.
