Julia Slingo is a British meteorologist and climate scientist who served as Chief Scientist at the Met Office from 2009 to 2016, the first woman to hold the position.
Before joining the Met Office, Slingo was Director of Climate Research at the Natural Environment Research Council National Centre for Atmospheric Science and founding director of the Walker Institute for Climate System Research at the University of Reading, where she remains a visiting professor in the Department of Meteorology. Her tenure at the Met Office spanned a period of significant public and policy attention to climate science, including debates over weather forecasting accuracy and the communication of climate projections. From 2015 to 2016 she served on the High Level Group of Scientific Advisers of the European Commission Scientific Advice Mechanism, advising on research and innovation policy.
