The Western Australian Museum is the state museum of Western Australia, operating as a statutory authority under the Museum Act 1969 within the Culture and the Arts Portfolio.
The museum comprises six main sites across Western Australia. Its flagship location, WA Museum Boola Bardip, stands in the Perth Cultural Centre and serves as the state museum. The other five sites reflect the maritime and regional heritage of the state: the WA Maritime Museum and WA Shipwrecks Museum in Fremantle, the Museum of the Great Southern in Albany, the Museum of Geraldton in Geraldton, and the Museum of the Goldfields in Kalgoorlie-Boulder. Together these institutions preserve and interpret the natural history, cultural heritage and exploration legacy of one of Australia’s most vast and biodiverse states.
The Western Australian Museum features in our Field Notes coverage of rare marine discoveries along the state’s coast.
