University of Genoa.

The University of Genoa (Università di Genova) is a public research university in Genoa, a port city on the Italian Riviera in northwestern Italy.

Founded in 1481, it ranks among Italy’s largest universities and has built a strong tradition in marine and natural sciences—fitting for an institution in a historic maritime centre. The university’s location on the Ligurian coast places its researchers at the threshold of the Mediterranean, a body of water whose biodiversity and deep-sea habitats continue to yield discoveries. Genoa itself has long served as a gateway between terrestrial Europe and the open ocean, a geography that has shaped both the city’s history and the scientific questions pursued by its institutions.

The University of Genoa features in our Field Notes coverage of rare marine species documented in Mediterranean waters.
