Mode of transport

« Back to Glossary Index

**1. Modes of Transport:**

– Animal-powered transport:
– Use of working animals for transport of people and goods
– Animals used directly, as pack animals, or to pull watercraft or vehicles
– Common in developing countries
– Sustainable form of transportation
– Popular for cost-saving, leisure, exercise, and environmental reasons

– Air transport:
– Includes fixed-wing aircraft and helicopters
– Fastest mode of transport
– Commercial jets can reach speeds up to 955 km/h
Aviation has significant environmental impacts
– U.S. airlines burned about 16.2 billion gallons of fuel in a year

Human-powered transport:
Transport using human muscle-power
– Common in underdeveloped or inaccessible regions
– Enhanced through infrastructure like roads
– Includes bicycles, inline skates, rowing, and skiing
– Promotes cost-saving, exercise, and environmentalism

**2. Land Transport:**

– Vital for moving people, goods, and services
– Key factor in urban planning
– Includes rail and road transport
Rail transport uses wheeled vehicles on tracks
– Road transport includes automobiles, buses, trucks, bicycles, and pedestrians

**3. Water Transport:**

– Involves watercraft like boats, ships, and sailboats
– Takes place over bodies of water like seas, oceans, lakes, and rivers
– Important for trade and travel
– Ships are a common mode of water transport
– Navigability of waterways is crucial for water transport

**4. Other Modes of Transport:**

– Micromobility includes small electric vehicles
– Pipeline transport is used for liquids and gases
– Cable transport uses cables for propulsion
– Space transport involves spacecraft for outer space
– Drones are used for medicine and parcel delivery

**5. Components and Comparison of Transport Modes:**

– Components of a Mode of Transport:
Transport mode includes infrastructure and vehicles
– Workforce, propulsion system, and operations are key
– Thoroughfares, hubs, and power supply are vital
– Management, traffic signals, and signaling are essential
– Traction and control systems are crucial components

– Comparison of Transport Modes by Distance:
– Automobile is the most used for passenger transport
– Sea transport is widely used for freight transport
– Buses, air, railways, and urban rail follow for passengers
– Road, railways, oil pipelines, and inland navigation follow for freight
– Distances traveled vary across different modes of transport

Mode of transport (Wikipedia)

A mode of transport is a method or way of travelling, or of transporting people or cargo. The different modes of transport include air, water, and land transport, which includes rails or railways, road and off-road transport. Other modes of transport also exist, including pipelines, cable transport, and space transport. Human-powered transport and animal-powered transport are sometimes regarded as distinct modes, but they may lie in other categories such as land or water transport.

In general, transportation refers to the moving of people, animals, and other goods from one place to another, and means of transport refers to the transport facilities used to carry people or cargo according to the chosen mode. Examples of the means of transport include automobile, airplane, ship, truck, and train. Each mode of transport has a fundamentally different set of technological solutions. Each mode has its own infrastructure, vehicles, transport operators and operations.
